I browsed Seths website years ago just to keep up with him after having heard him at the 2004 Larry Joe Taylor Texas Music Festival. I also bought his “Live @ Gruene Hall” cd after seeing him perform much of the same set at LJT. I was knocked out by his performance, and the cd provided a lot of aftervibe. It blew me away also! Then, after a while, his website went dark, and he was rumored to be playing lead guitar for Ray Wylie Hubbard….and not fronting his own band. The years passed, but I kept checking the site occasionally, and finally got to his revised website, complete with tour dates. Sure enough, he was going to be playing The Iron Horse Tavern in Wichita Falls Texas in early October, 2009. It’s about a 3-4 hour drive from me, so I headed down for the show. This was a release party for his latest effort, “That Kind of Man”, which I had not heard, and was looking forward to. He takes the stage and introduces a backing vocalist by the name of Jessica Murray, noting “she is with child”. I was just stunned….I had only heard Jessica Murray on Corey Morrows “Full Exposure” cd, on a song entitled “Beer”. She stepped out and took a lead vocal that to this day makes the uninitiated sit straight up and go WOW!! And I still do also. The girl can sing! So, I’m thinking “I get two top notch artists for the price of 1 show…GRRREAT!” Seth plays his entire new album, and the vocal harmonies and the songs are superb…and occasionally, Seth goes over and plants a big kiss on Jessica…and I’m thinking “if her husband sees this, there’s gonna be trouble”. Doesn’t phase Seth in the least, so I figure to myself the husbands not around. For the show closer, Seth calls a friend of his out of the audience to help out with my favorite Boz Skaggs tune, “Lend Me A Dime”. They proceeded to tear the house down!! It was GREAT! After the show, Seth was available to sign the new album, and I asked if I could get Jessica to sign it also, since she did backing vocals. He brought her out a short time later, and she quite graciously signed the album. She mentioned she was due in about 6 months, and her 3 year old was going to have some competition, nodding over at Seth, saying dad had pretty much spoiled him….and then the thought occurred to me that I must be the densest person on the face of the earth, and probably the only person in Texas that night that didn’t know they were married…sigh.. This album is quite different from Live @ Gruene Hall, and stands on its own quite well, and I give it a definite BUY IT!! recommendation. But you should also BUY Live @ Gruene Hall, which I consider one of the absolute best blues-rock albums EVER! It is just such a tight album! Seths dad, Ronnie Walker and Philip Tom are one of the most solid rhythm units I have had the pleasure of listening to, and they allow Johnny Marshall on the lead Hammond B-3 and Seth on lead guitar to really stretch out and have some fun. Seth has one of the most amazing blues voices…and this album is the perfect showcase for it…I get goosebumps just thinking about it even now!
SETH JAMES’s previous cd “BAD LUCK AND TROUBLE” was a very cool excursion into the BLUES and I expected something else in the same vain. Not so. This cd shows a totaly different side to SETH JAMES. This is almost pure country with blues and rock touches.
Normaly that would be a musical problem for me, but as was the case with GRISSOM and PAISLEY, this is UEBER COUNTRY. Great songs, great storytelling, superb guitar work and a fabulous voice make this compelling listening, even if you are not a country fan. If you like the guitar, killer vocals and intelligent songs, buy this cd, it is awesome, whatever your musical preferences.
