Hello?!? It’s a CHILDREN’S book…Maybe the alphabet in big letters was confusing to some 1 star reviewers. This book is an excellent addition to a child’s educational library.
This is only about the fourth review on this book I’ve written on Amazon, but mysteriously they keep vanishing from this sight…why is that??
I have old reviews on other books from much longer ago that still exist on this site. HEY FOUR MORE DAYS of the BUSH/CHENEY regime, then maybe the power play is nonexistent and we can once again speak freely!
TRUTH TO POWER.
With that said, I felt like “America” by Lynn Cheney, was another fine example of the lies we’ve been sold over the last eight years about patriotism, “American values”, etc. The book is scattered and paints a nice unrealistic picture of America, without really teaching anything or real value. The book tries to make you feel good about something that doesn’t really exist.
On my first review of this book, I had just returned from a long cross country road trip with my two children a few years ago. I compared this book to the reality of what we saw along our journey out West. We passed by lots of Native American reservations where people are living in small shacks that wouldn’t be suitable for our pet dog to be kept in. They have little access to healthy food, clean water (esp. after the deregulation on big industries adding more pollution to our air and water over the last eight years), and are very poorly educated. We stayed in a hotel one night outside of San Fransisco in an area that is invested with drugs and crime. We didn’t know when we booked the room in advance from back home, but realized as soon as we turned off the highway that night in CA, where a few police cars were pulled over in front of the hotel arresting a couple of shady looking characters. I stayed awake that whole night sitting up with my back against the hotel door, which showed signs of broken and repaired locks from times before. We don’t actually have to travel far to experience that side of America, we just cross the Highway to our kids’ middle school, here in our city where we drive through streets filled with crack addicts, prostitutes, armed drug dealers and other hard criminals that surround the middle school neighborhood. I guess if you’re a very, very RICH white family, especially with a husband in control of the country you can choose to see what you’d like. And you’ll always have your brainwashed, Fox news-watching, disillusioned followers who will continue to hide from reality, or try to falsely create their own reality. Instead of writing propagandizing books to warp the minds of children, why not invest your time and money into the needy so ALL can live in that beautiful Norman Rockwell world that you’d have us believe we live in? And why not write books to which the average American, black, white, brown, or yellow, can relate? I did appreciate the illustrators style in the book, but would appreciate more realistic pictures to take it a step towards reality.
A note to Lynn, please leave our children’s history books alone, as I have a feeling that you may be heading in that direction from here with your style of propaganda writing, and realizing that history is going to be a concern for your family and the Bush’s.
This is the second book I have purchased by Lynne Cheney. I purchase this for my eight year old daughter. The book goes through the alphabet giving bits of information about America. My daughter loved it. It gives just enough information to keep her interested. Loved the illustrations by Robin Preiss Glasser. I highly recommend.
Lynne Cheney loves America and loves children. You have to open and look at the pages to appreciate all the wonderful facets; artwork, history, family, love of a nation. She helps us love and appreciate our nation. Our nation benefits when people are reading Lynn’s books to children or young and old are reading this and the other books written by Lynne.
The Book is great & the Kids love it. They also can learn a lot from this Book. It is number 1-A perfect for Kids.
